What Is a Speed Variator?
A Speed Variator is a device used to regulate the speed of an electric motor. It uses a single-phase alternating current to vary the speed. Some of the more common speed variators use a triggered semiconductor, thyristor, or triac to modify the phase of the current. By modifying the phase, a speed variator can pass a large portion of the alternation.

Single half-cycle mode

As shown in FIG. 4, this speed variator has all the elements of the variator shown in FIG. 1. It further comprises a circuit CP for protection against overloads. The circuit CP is a second shunt circuit that charges the capacitor C during negative half-cycles.
High negative feedback
A Speed Variator is a motor control system that varies the speed of a motor. Its basic structure includes a triggerable Silicon controlled rectifier, a motor and a phase shifting circuit. The rectifier is connected in series with the motor to an ac current source. The circuit includes a capacitive branch and a resistive branch, with a regulating potentiometer on the resistive branch. The control electrode of the rectifier component is connected to the junction between the branches. Another component is a voltage responsive unidirectional semiconductor component, which operates in parallel with the resistive branch.
Triac Speed Variators have difficult regulation at low speeds, and their effective power is weakened by their increased reduction in angle of passage of current in each phase. This makes it difficult to achieve the desired or set speed. In addition, the voltage of the supply source affects the set or desired speed.
When the load increases, the motor M will slow down. The increasing voltage will reduce the conduction of transistor T1 during the positive half-cycle of the motor. This in turn will cause the capacitor to charge more rapidly and the triac T to open wider. This will result in a compensating negative feedback circuit RE.
Negative feedback can also cause oscillation. Moreover, it can result in unstable systems. One way to measure stability is by using the Nyquist stability criterion. This criterion is used to identify stable feedback systems. If a feedback loop is stable, the error signal will be small.
